CHAPTER 8

Mac was sitting upright in a chair by his bed when his physical therapist walked into the room.

“Are you ready for foot races in the corridor?” Glen asked.

“Sure, if you’re willing to be my feet and legs.” Mac said smiling.

“I can always count on you to be up. It sure makes my job a lot easier. Let’s get you in the wheelchair and down to the pool. I’ll get your swim trunks. I want to do some water exercises that will help to strengthen the muscles in your legs. We might even see a few chicks in their bikinis!” His smile turned into a chuckle as he visualized what he had just said.

The thought of seeing someone in a bikini made Mac smile. “If I’m lucky I may actually have it happen someday. I just prefer that the bikini be on someone who is over twenty and under the age of forty and still has her tits standing up instead of pointing to the ground!”

That made Glen laugh even harder.

Glen helped Mac change his clothes and put on a life vest. He helped him back into a wheelchair made for the pool. The chair could be pushed into the water, and the occupant removed to a wide lip around the end of the pool. Mac sat on the lip waiting while Glen put the water wheelchair away from the sloping ramp.

“This feels good! I seem to have enough natural buoyancy that my legs can rise up to the surface without any effort from me.”

Mac held onto the coping of the pool and managed to twist his body so his legs floated out behind him. He stretched his arms out to their full extension then let go. He moved his arms in circular motions to keep his body in place. When he felt himself moving away from the edge he dog paddled to bring the coping within his grasp. “What is it you want to do today?” He asked Glen.

“I’m pretty impressed with what you’re doing right now. That’s really good. Do you think you could actually swim for a few yards using only your arms for forward motion?”

“I don’t know, let’s give it a try.”

Staying in the shallow, Mac struck out across the pool with Glen at his side. The first try carried him over half way across the width of the pool. Mac stopped to catch his breath, holding on to Glen who was standing in the four feet deep water.

“I’m not sure why I reach for you. I know the life belt will keep me afloat. But since I have so little mobility in my legs, I use you for support. My brain tells me one thing, while my instincts say something else.”

“Just look at you! Look how far you were able to go on your first attempt. I think you must be part fish. Mac, that’s great. Let me know when you’re ready to go the rest of the way.”
